Google vs. Uber: Which ride-sharing service will prevail?
Rumor has it; Google will be offering a similar service to Uber in the near future. Interestingly enough, Google is one of the biggest investors in Uber; however its new ride-sharing service would put it in direct competition with the smartphone app.
Neither Google nor Uber have made comments regarding the situation, although Google employees have been reportedly using the service with Uber executives made well-aware. This move would put Uber in a tricky situation, as the app uses Google Maps to find drivers and riders.
Along with a new ride-sharing service, Google is also in the process of developing its driver-less car technology. The company predicts this project will be done in two to five years, according to Bloomberg News.
Uber, on the other hand, just announced a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University to create the Uber Advanced Technologies Center in Pittsburgh which will aim to develop Uber’s own self-driving vehicle technology.
After a year of bad press and scandals, Google’s announcement doesn’t help Uber’s faltering reputation. It’ll be interesting to see how the two services work out in the same market.
